I'm still in shock from the defeat of the immigration bill. I can't remember a day when I was more ashamed of my country... unless it's the day I found out that the sanctions on Iraq had killed a few hundred thousand people. That day I ceased to be a patriot, until I became one again when we liberated Iraq on April 9, 2003.
This second failure of my country to acknowledge the rights of immigrants-- the last while Bush is in office presumably-- makes me ashamed to be an American. Am I a fair-weather patriot, then, loving my country only when it is in the right? No, I'm still a patriot, but today that patriotism is like the agony of loving an unfaithful woman.
