Thanks for this very thoughtful piece. You write:

Yes that is exactly why I linked the two issues --- not because coercing movement is any better in other settings, but because in this particular setting, it is unarguable by anyone except the brain-dead that coercing movement has a massive negative effect on desperate people.

Hopefully the US does let in Haitian refugees and it sets a precedent for a more open policy generally.
