I think it's a consensus amongst historians that if the US had decisively won the first battle of Bull Run (as nearly happened), the Confederacy might well have ended early and slavery not abolished for a long time. In a sense, then, it was good that we lost that battle. Was it therefore laudable?

Iraq may well prove a quasi-victory from which Tafiri ideology never recovers, but that doesn't mean we should be pleased with those who allowed Iraq to become so viable for Islamic terrorists.
