Some states are evolving independent committees to draw district lines, obviating gerrymandering. Now if only more states would do this, it would be a grand thing. Sadly, I think it's a little like the doomed effort to get California to allocate its presidential electors proportionally - it would usually be disadvantageous to the incumbent party (which probably gerrymandered the districts in the first place) and so it won't go through.

As a side note, I suspect business leaders would demand Fed independence if it didn't exist.
